VIOFO A329S: Is It the Best Dash Cam in Australia? 2CH vs 3CH, and vs the A229 Pro (2026)

VIOFO A329S 2CH 4K 60fps dash cam, front and rear cameras

The VIOFO A329S is the camera people mean when they ask us for “the best VIOFO”, and if you have searched for the best dash cam in Australia this year you have probably already seen it named. Short version: if you want the sharpest, smoothest front footage you can buy for around $600, the A329S 2CH is it. If you drive rideshare or a work car, the A329S with the RCC360 cabin camera is the three-channel build to get. If $600 is more than you wanted to spend, the A229 Pro gives you 4K front and 2K rear for $459 and you will not feel short-changed. Here is how to decide, with the trade-offs spelled out and live prices.

Pick by how you drive

Find the line that sounds like you, then read that section below.

You want the best footage of the road, full stop: VIOFO A329S 2CH. 4K at 60 frames per second up front means a plate on a car overtaking you at speed is caught in twice as many frames as a 30fps camera.

Rideshare, taxi, delivery or a shared work car: A329S 2CH plus the RCC360 infrared cabin camera. Three channels, and the cabin view records in total darkness.

You want 4K front and 2K rear but $600 is too much: VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH. Same sensors, 4K at 30fps, a front CPL filter in the box, for $459.

You want front and rear cover for the lowest outlay: VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH. 2K front and 2K rear on Sony STARVIS 2 sensors, for $329. You give up 4K detail up front, not the rear camera.

You want the A329S's footage with nothing visible on the glass: VIOFO T330. Same 4K 60fps front and 2K rear, no screen, anti-tamper design. On pre-order for mid-October delivery.

Electric vehicle or Tesla: the A329S works well in EVs. Read our Tesla Sentry Mode vs dash cam guide and the EV parking mode guide before you choose how to power it.

What makes the A329S different

Most 4K dash cams record at 30 frames per second. The A329S records 4K at 60fps, which matters for exactly one reason: motion. A number plate on a car crossing an intersection, or passing you on the freeway, is in frame for a fraction of a second. At 60fps you get twice as many chances of a sharp, readable frame. If you would rather have HDR for harsh sun and headlights, it also records 4K at 30fps with HDR, and you choose the mode in the app.

Both cameras use Sony STARVIS 2 sensors: an 8MP IMX678 up front and a 5MP IMX675 at the rear. These are the same generation of sensor as the A229 Pro and A229 Ultra, so low-light performance is in the same class; what the A329S adds is the frame rate, Wi-Fi 6 and the option of external storage.

Wi-Fi 6 is the feature you will notice every time you use it. Pulling a clip off an older 2.4GHz dash cam takes minutes. The A329S connects on 5GHz Wi-Fi 6 at up to 30MB/s, so a one-minute 4K event file is on your phone before the other driver has finished swapping details. GPS is built in for speed and location on every clip, Bluetooth handles voice control, and the 2.4-inch screen lets you check the view without your phone.

Storage is the other unusual spec. It takes microSD cards up to 512GB and, unlike any other dash cam we sell, an external SSD up to 4TB for drivers who want weeks of footage before the loop overwrites. Most owners will never need that, but a courier or a fleet manager might.

Honest trade-offs

  • No memory card in the box. Budget for a high-endurance card. 4K 60fps files are large, so we suggest 256GB if you use parking mode; 128GB is fine for driving only.
  • Parking mode needs the HK6 hardwire kit ($36.99). The car power cable in the box only records while you drive.
  • All-in cost is closer to $750 once you add a card and the hardwire kit. Still less than a BlackVue Elite 10, but more than the $600 headline.
  • The screen is small. 2.4 inches is enough to aim the camera and play a clip. If you want a big touchscreen, the FineVu GX9000 is the one with it; see which FineVu to buy.
  • No cloud. VIOFO cameras do not have LTE or remote live view. If you want to see your parked car from your phone, that is BlackVue's territory; our brands guide explains the difference.
  • Heat. Rated for -20°C to 65°C. That is standard for the class, not a heat-specialist rating. Park in the shade where you can, and use a sunshade in summer.

What you need to run it

Memory card (required): VIOFO 128GB industrial card ($115) for driving only, or the 256GB ($173) if you run parking mode or the cabin camera. Both are rated for continuous recording; a standard phone card is not.

Parking mode: the HK6 Type-C ACC hardwire kit ($36.99) connects to the fuse box with a low-voltage cut-off so it never flattens the battery. Prefer not to touch fuses? The OP100 OBD-II cable ($85.99) plugs into the diagnostics port instead. Our power options guide compares them.

Rear glare: the CPL-600 rear filter ($26.99) cuts reflections off the back glass and is worth it on tinted or steeply raked rear windows.

EVs and long parking: a battery pack such as the VIOFO BP100 or Cellink NEO 8+S runs parking mode for days without touching the car's battery. Our battery pack comparison explains which size suits your parking pattern.

Is the A329S the best dash cam in Australia?

For footage quality per dollar in a two-channel camera, yes, it is the one we would put in our own cars. It is not the best at everything. If you want to check on a parked car from your phone, BlackVue's cloud cameras do that and VIOFO does not. If your car cooks in the Queensland sun all day, FineVu's heat management is the safer bet. If you want a big touchscreen, the FineVu GX9000 has one. And if you want the best three-channel footage from a single unit rather than an add-on camera, the VIOFO T340 arrives in October with 4K front, 2K cabin and 2K rear built in. Our 2026 best dash cams guide ranks all of them by use case.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the VIOFO A329S and the A229 Pro?

Both use Sony STARVIS 2 sensors with 4K front and 2K rear. The A329S adds 4K at 60fps (the A229 Pro is 30fps), dual-band Wi-Fi 6 for much faster downloads, voice control, and external SSD support. The A229 Pro costs about $140 less and includes a front CPL filter. If motion clarity and download speed matter, A329S; if you want 4K on a budget, A229 Pro.

Can the A329S record the inside of the car?

Yes, with the RCC360 cabin camera, which plugs into the A329S and adds a 2K HDR infrared view of the cabin. That turns the 2CH kit into a three-channel system. It is the set-up we recommend for rideshare, taxi and delivery drivers.

Does the A329S come with a memory card?

No. You need a high-endurance microSD card up to 512GB. We recommend the VIOFO industrial-grade 128GB card for driving only, or 256GB if you use parking mode or the cabin camera.

Does the A329S have parking mode?

Yes. It supports hybrid parking recording with low-power impact detection, auto event detection, time-lapse and low-bitrate modes. To use any of them you need the HK6 hardwire kit or the OP100 OBD-II cable, because the included car power cable only powers the camera while you drive.

Is the A329S good for a Tesla or another EV?

Yes. It is a popular EV choice because of its slim cabling and flexible parking-mode power options. In an EV we suggest pairing it with a battery pack or the OBD-II cable rather than a fuse-box hardwire; our EV guides cover the reasons.

Is 4K 60fps really better than 4K 30fps?

For fast-moving plates, yes: twice the frames means twice the chances of a sharp one. For a car parked in harsh sun or facing headlights, the 4K 30fps HDR mode may give you a cleaner image, and you can switch between them in the app.
