Are dash cams legal in Australia?

Yes — dash cams are legal to use in every Australian state and territory. The key rule is that your camera must be mounted so it doesn't obstruct your view of the road, which is why most drivers position it behind the rear-view mirror. Rules on exact mounting position and on recording audio can differ slightly between states, so it's worth a quick check for where you drive. Footage can be used to support an insurance claim or be provided to police.

Front-only, front + rear, or three cameras — which do I need?

A front camera captures the road ahead and covers the majority of incidents. Adding a rear camera protects you if you're rear-ended and records more in car parks. A third (cabin or interior) camera is popular with rideshare drivers, EV owners and fleets who also want to record inside the vehicle. What is parking mode?

Parking mode keeps your dash cam monitoring the vehicle while it's parked and switched off, recording when it detects motion or an impact. It usually needs a hardwire kit so the camera can draw a small amount of power from your car. It's ideal for street parking and car parks, where a lot of avoidable damage happens.

Will a dash cam flatten my battery?

Used normally — recording while you drive — no. For parking mode, the camera draws a small current while parked, but quality hardwire kits include a voltage cut-off that stops drawing power before your battery gets too low. For EVs and hybrids, or vehicles left parked for long periods, a separate battery pack avoids touching the main battery altogether.

Can I fit a dash cam to my EV or hybrid?

Yes. EVs and hybrids can run a dedicated dash cam, which gives you independent footage you control and a tidy install suited to the vehicle. Parking protection can be set up without draining the 12V battery. Install details vary by model, so ask us if you'd like the specifics for yours.

Do I need a memory card, and what size?

Yes — dash cams record to a microSD card. We recommend a high-endurance card built for continuous recording, as standard phone or camera cards wear out quickly. 128GB suits most single and front + rear setups; 256GB or larger is better for 4K or multi-camera systems. Many of our kits include a suitable card.

Can I install it myself?

Most single-camera, plug-in setups take just a few minutes using the supplied 12V adapter. Hardwiring — for a tidier finish and parking mode — is a bigger job; many people do it themselves with our step-by-step guides, and we can also help you find an installer near you.
