The U3000's dual radar watches for approaching movement while the camera sleeps on minimal power, waking to record buffered clips — the lead-up, the event and the exit. That low draw is exactly what a dedicated battery sustains best: the iVolt Max runs radar surveillance for weeks, not hours.
Just as important is what it doesn't touch: your car battery. Thinkware specifically recommends the iVolt Max for EVs and vehicles with smart alternators, where wiring a dash cam to the 12V battery is risky or can affect the vehicle's warranty. The camera hardwires to the battery instead; the battery charges only while you drive — refilled in as little as 55 minutes — and a Bluetooth app shows charge and temperature from your phone.
Installation
How it goes in: the iVolt Max installs at the fuse box (it charges while the ignition is on), and the U3000's included hardwire cable connects to the battery rather than the car. It's a tidy job for an auto electrician, and the result is completely invisible.

Why add a battery when the U3000 has a hardwire cable?
Hardwiring to the car battery gives you hours of parking mode before the voltage cut-off steps in. The iVolt Max gives you days to weeks — and in EVs and smart-alternator vehicles, it's the safe way to run parking mode at all.
Will it drain my car battery?
No. The camera runs entirely off the iVolt Max while parked; the battery only draws from the car while the engine is running, to recharge.
Can I install it myself?
Confident DIYers can — both connections are at the fuse box. Most customers have an auto electrician fit battery kits.
What warranty applies?
The U3000 carries a 3-year Australian warranty via TDJ Australia and the iVolt Max a 12-month warranty — both on genuine Australian stock, plus your Australian Consumer Law rights.
