Step 1: Check what's in the box
Every current BlackVue kit sold in Australia arrives with the camera (front and rear units on 2CH kits), a windscreen mount, the front-to-rear coax cable on dual-channel kits, a hardwire kit, cable clips and a trim tool, and a 64GB genuine BlackVue microSD card already in the box.
One thing that surprises people: there's no 12V cigarette-lighter adapter in the box. BlackVue designs its cameras to be hardwired (or run from a battery pack), because that's what enables parking mode — the feature most BlackVue buyers are paying for. If you want a simple plug-in setup instead, the 12V power cable is available separately, but we'd steer most owners toward hardwiring or a battery from day one.
Step 2: Insert and format the microSD card
The included 64GB card comes ready to go: push it into the front camera's card slot until it clicks (camera powered off). If you're upsizing — worthwhile for 4K models and anyone running parking mode — stick with the genuine BlackVue microSD card, which the cameras are validated against, and format it in the camera via the app before first use. Reformatting every month or two keeps recordings healthy and takes about ten seconds.
Step 3: Mount the camera and connect power
Mount the front unit high on the windscreen behind the rear-view mirror, inside the wiper sweep and out of your line of sight, and check the angle in the app's live view before pressing the adhesive down. Step 4: Pair the camera with the BlackVue app
Download the BlackVue app (iOS or Android) before your first drive. The current app asks you to create a free BlackVue account and sign in — the old Wi-Fi-only mode has been retired — so do the first-time setup somewhere with mobile data or home Wi-Fi. After that, the app works offline for direct camera connections.
Pairing is straightforward: add a camera in the app, connect to the camera's own Wi-Fi network when prompted (the default password is printed on the camera or the quick-start card), and the live view appears. From there you can check your mounting angle, play back clips and change every setting without touching the camera again.
Step 5: Fine-tune the settings

The settings we check on every BlackVue we set up:
- Time zone and time sync. Set your state's time zone so the timestamp on your footage is right — it matters if a clip ever becomes evidence.
- Speed unit. Confirm km/h so the GPS speed stamp reads correctly.
- Parking mode type. Motion detection gives you buffered clips of anything that moves near the car; time-lapse records everything at 1fps; power-saving sleeps at under 1mA and wakes in under a second on impact — the right choice for long airport stays or EVs. - Event file protection. Turn on overwrite protection so locked impact clips can never be recorded over — BlackVue preserves up to 50 protected event files.
- Voice guidance volume. The spoken announcements are handy for confirming parking mode is active, but you can quieten them once you trust the camera.
Step 6 (optional): Connect BlackVue Cloud
Cloud is BlackVue's headline extra: live view from anywhere, push notifications the moment the camera detects an impact while parked, and remote playback and backup of clips. Every BlackVue account includes 1GB of free "My Drive" cloud storage, and the free Cloud tier covers what most private owners need.
Two things to know before you switch it on. First, Cloud needs its own internet connection in the car — either the optional LTE module with a SIM, or a Wi-Fi hotspot. Second, it's supported on the ELITE series, DR770X II and Box Pro, but not the DR590X PLUS, which is a Wi-Fi-direct camera. If you bought a DR590X, everything else in this guide still applies — you just skip this step.
Step 7: Check your privacy settings
A question we hear a lot: can anyone else see my dash cam footage? No. Your footage records to the microSD card in the camera, and a BlackVue is private by default — nothing is shared publicly unless you deliberately turn sharing on. Worth a 30-second check anyway:
- Open the BlackVue app and select your camera
- Go to Camera Settings, then GPS Access & Live Broadcast
- Confirm Live Broadcast is Off (it's off unless you enabled it)
With that confirmed, footage stays between you, your memory card and — if you enable Cloud — your own private account.

Yes — the current BlackVue app requires a free account and an internet connection for first-time setup. After the initial sign-in, you can connect to your camera directly over Wi-Fi without mobile coverage. Cameras registered to your account also get 1GB of free cloud storage.
How long does BlackVue setup take?
Allow 20–30 minutes for a plug-and-play or OBD-II setup including app pairing, and 60–90 minutes for a professional front-and-rear hardwire. The app pairing itself takes about five minutes.
Is my BlackVue footage private?
Yes. Footage records to your microSD card, and sharing features like Live Broadcast are off by default. Cloud features are tied to your personal account — nothing is visible to anyone else unless you deliberately share a clip.
Do I have to use BlackVue Cloud?
No — every BlackVue works fully as a standalone dash cam without Cloud. Cloud adds remote live view and impact alerts, which fleet operators and owners of frequently parked cars love, but it needs an LTE module or hotspot in the car. Plenty of owners never enable it.
