Before you lodge a warranty claim, work through this. In our experience the large majority of dash cams reported as faulty are not faulty at all: they have a tired memory card, a power problem, out-of-date firmware, or they have shut themselves down in the heat exactly as designed. Every fix below takes minutes and costs nothing.

Four things cause most dash cam problems

Check these before anything else. If your camera won't turn on, won't record, drops footage, or has stopped triggering in parking mode, the cause is almost always one of the four below.

The memory card

Cards wear out from constant rewriting. A worn or wrong-type card causes recording failures, corrupted files and random reboots. This is the single most common cause.

Power

A loose cable, a blown fuse, a socket that dies with the ignition, or a low-voltage cut-off set too high will all look exactly like a dead camera.

Firmware

Manufacturers ship fixes regularly. Wi-Fi drop-outs, parking-mode bugs and app pairing failures are often already solved in an update you haven't installed.

Heat

An Australian summer dashboard can pass 70°C. Cameras shut down deliberately to protect themselves. That is a safety feature, not a fault.

Quick diagnosis

1. The camera won't turn on

1Check the obvious first. Unplug the power cable at both ends and reseat it firmly. USB-C and mini-USB plugs work loose with vibration, and a cable that looks seated often isn't.
2Test on a different power source. If it's hardwired, plug it into a 12V cigarette socket with the supplied adaptor. If it works there, the problem is the hardwire kit or the fuse tap, not the camera.
3Check the fuse. Hardwire kits use inline fuses that blow. Check the fuse in the kit itself and the fuse in the tapped circuit. Many cars also cut power to accessory sockets when the ignition is off, which is normal.
4Try a different cable. Cables fail far more often than cameras, particularly where they've been tucked behind a pillar or under a headliner and pinched.
5Remove the memory card and power up. A failed card can prevent some models from booting. If it starts without the card, you've found your problem.
Worth knowing: if the camera was recently installed and has never worked, it's an installation issue in almost every case, not a faulty unit. Go back to whoever fitted it.

2. It powers on but isn't recording

1Format the card in the camera. Not on a computer. In-camera formatting writes the file structure the camera expects. This alone fixes a large share of no-recording faults.
2Check loop recording is enabled. If it's off and the card is full, the camera stops rather than overwriting.
3Check protected files aren't filling the card. Event files locked by the G-sensor are excluded from the loop. Enough of them and there's no writable space left. Clear them out.
4Confirm the card is supported. Check your model's maximum capacity. A 512GB card in a camera rated to 256GB may appear to work and then fail silently.
5Try a known-good card. If a fresh high-endurance card fixes it, the old card was the fault.

3. Memory card errors and corrupted footage

Dash cams write continuously, overwriting the same card thousands of times. A standard microSD card built for phone photos will not survive it. This is the most misdiagnosed problem in the category.

Use a high-endurance card Built for continuous rewriting. A standard card can fail within months.
Format in-camera every 6 to 8 weeks Clears fragmentation and file-table errors before they cause data loss.
Replace the card every 12 to 18 months Cards are consumable. Budget for replacement the way you would wiper blades.
Save important footage immediately Copy incident files off the card the same day. Don't rely on the lock function alone.
Stick to genuine or reputable cards Counterfeit high-capacity cards are widespread and report false capacity.
If footage matters to you: a card that has thrown one error will throw more. Replace it. A $70 card is cheaper than losing the one recording you actually needed.

4. Parking mode isn't triggering

Parking mode is the most misunderstood feature on any dash cam, and the source of most support enquiries.

It needs constant power

A cigarette-socket lead that dies with the ignition cannot run parking mode. You need one of three things: a hardwire kit to a constant fuse, an OBD-II cable, or a dedicated battery pack.

Check the settings

1Confirm parking mode is switched on. On most models it's off by default.
2Check the mode. Impact-only won't record motion. Motion detection won't trigger on a light knock. Most people want both.
3Raise the sensitivity. Default settings are often too low to catch a car-park bump.
4Check the voltage cut-off. If it's set to 12.0V and your battery rests at 12.2V, the camera will shut off almost immediately. Lower it, but see the warning below.
5Check the timer. Many kits stop after a set number of hours. If yours is set to 6 hours, an overnight incident won't be recorded.

5. Flat car battery in the morning

If your car struggles to start after the camera has been parked overnight, the cut-off is set too low for the state of your battery.

1Raise the cut-off voltage. Counter-intuitive but correct. A higher cut-off means the camera stops sooner and leaves more charge for starting.
2Have the battery tested. An ageing battery drops voltage quickly under any load. Most auto shops test free.
3Consider short drives. If you only do 10 minutes at a time, the alternator never fully recharges what parking mode used.
4Fit a battery pack. The permanent fix. A dedicated pack charges while you drive and runs parking mode entirely on its own, so your starter battery is never touched.
EV and hybrid owners: this matters more for you, not less. EVs run accessories from a small 12V battery that isn't designed for constant draw, and many stop maintaining it when parked. A battery pack is strongly recommended rather than optional.

6. Wi-Fi and app connection problems

1Turn off mobile data briefly. Phones detect that the camera's Wi-Fi has no internet and silently switch back to 4G, dropping the connection.
2Forget the network and reconnect. Stored credentials go stale after a firmware update.
3Check the band. Some cameras broadcast on 5GHz, some on 2.4GHz, and older phones don't see 5GHz networks.
4Grant location permission. Android requires it for Wi-Fi scanning. Without it the app cannot find the camera.
5Get close. Connect from inside the car. Range through a windscreen is short.

7. Cloud, live view and LTE

This one is usually a misunderstanding rather than a fault. A dash cam has no internet connection of its own unless you give it one.

To use cloud features you need either a built-in or add-on LTE module with an active data SIM, or a mobile hotspot the camera connects to. Without one, the camera still records everything locally, but there is no remote live view, no push alerts and no GPS tracking.

If you have an LTE module fitted and cloud still won't work: check the SIM has active data, check the camera is registered to your account, and confirm your plan hasn't lapsed.

8. Overheating and summer shutdowns

A parked car in an Australian summer regularly exceeds 70°C at the windscreen. Cameras have thermal protection that shuts them down before damage occurs. A camera that stops on a 40°C day and works again that evening is behaving correctly.

1Park in shade or use a sunshade where you can. It makes a bigger difference than people expect.
2Mount behind the rear-view mirror. Shaded by the mirror housing and out of direct sun.
3Choose supercapacitor models for hot climates. Cameras with internal lithium batteries swell and fail in heat. Supercapacitor designs are built for it.
4Use a battery pack with thermal cut-off if you need parking protection through summer. LiFePO4 packs tolerate heat far better than standard lithium.

9. Blurry, dark or glare-heavy footage

1Remove the protective film from the lens. It happens more often than you'd think, and it's the first thing to check.
2Clean both sides of the windscreen. Interior glass film from plastics off-gassing causes haze and headlight starbursts at night.
3Fit a CPL filter. A polarising filter cuts dashboard reflection and windscreen glare, and it's the single biggest daytime image improvement available.
4Check what's behind the lens. Mounting over a heating element, a heavily tinted strip or a rain sensor degrades the image.
5Set expectations for night plates. Reading a plate on a moving car at night is hard for any camera. Higher resolution and a STARVIS 2 sensor help, but nothing makes it certain.

10. Rear camera not detected

1Reseat the coaxial cable at both ends. It should click. A partially seated plug gives an intermittent connection that comes and goes with vibration.
2Check the cable run. Coax is easily crushed in a door seal, a boot hinge or a pillar trim clip. Look for pinch points along the route.
3Confirm the right port. Multi-channel cameras have separate inputs. A rear camera in a cabin-camera port won't be recognised.
4Test with a spare cable if you have one. Cables fail far more often than cameras.

Brand-specific quirks

BlackVue

Cloud needs its own internet connection through the CM100GLTE module or a hotspot; it does not work out of the box. Format the card in-camera or through the BlackVue app rather than on a computer. If the app won't pair, turn off mobile data on your phone first, since it will otherwise fall back to 4G.

Thinkware

Radar parking mode on the U3000 and U3000 Pro needs a clear line of sight; a heavily tinted or obstructed windscreen area reduces detection. If the LTE module isn't connecting, confirm the SIM has active data and the module is seated fully. Thinkware's voltage cut-off defaults are conservative and often need lowering slightly for parking mode to run a useful length of time.

VIOFO

VIOFO models are particular about card quality and generally want a format in-camera after every firmware update. If Wi-Fi drops repeatedly, check the firmware version first, since VIOFO ship fixes frequently. The HK4 and HK6 hardwire kits have a configurable cut-off that is worth setting deliberately rather than leaving at default.

FineVu

FineVu cameras are screen-free, so most settings are changed through the app or a settings file on the card. Thermal-protected parking mode will suspend recording in extreme heat and resume when it cools, which is intended behaviour. If the OBD-II cable isn't powering parking mode, confirm your vehicle keeps the OBD port live with the ignition off, as some models do not.
