Jaecoo went from zero to more than 10,000 cars on Australian roads in a little over a year, and the J5 EV alone found 9,439 buyers between January and August 2026. Owners keep asking us the same thing: the J7 and J8 say they have a dashcam built in, so do I need another one, and what goes in the J5 EV, which has none? Short version: the factory Jaecoo dashcam is a front-only camera with no memory card in the box and nothing documented for parking. For a J5 EV or J7 SHS, fit the VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH with a BP100 battery pack for parking mode. For a petrol J7 or J8, the A229 Pro with the HK4 hardwire kit. Want the sharpest footage in the range? The A329S. Here is why, model by model, with live prices.
Pick by your Jaecoo
Find your car, then read the section that explains the choice.
Jaecoo J5 EV: no factory camera. VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH plus the BP100 battery pack so parking mode never touches the car's 12V. Value option: the A229 Plus 2CH.
Jaecoo J7 SHS (plug-in hybrid): the factory front camera stays, a proper two-channel goes in beside it. A229 Pro 2CH or A329S 2CH, with the BP100 for parking mode: the engine does not run to charge the 12V while it sits.
Jaecoo J7 Ridge and J8 (petrol): A229 Pro 2CH with the HK4 hardwire kit. A conventional 12V battery makes hardwired parking mode the normal choice here.
You want the best footage in the range: the A329S 2CH, 4K at 60fps up front, on any of them. Our A329S buyer's guide explains what the extra $140 buys.
Rideshare or a work car: A329S 2CH plus the RCC360 infrared cabin camera for a three-channel system.
Does your Jaecoo already have a dashcam?
Jaecoo Australia's own spec sheets answer this. The J7 SHS Summit sheet lists "Built-in Dashcam (Memory Card not included)", the J7 Ridge page says the same, and the J8 Track and Ridge list an "In-Built Dashcam (TF Card Not Included)". The J5 EV spec sheet lists no dashcam at all. So:
| Model | Powertrain | Factory dashcam | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|---|
| J5 EV | Electric, 58.9kWh LFP, 402km WLTP | Not listed | Nothing. Australia's best-selling Jaecoo records nothing on its own. |
| J7 Ridge | 1.6L turbo petrol, AWD | Listed, memory card not included | Front camera, plays back on the 14.8-inch screen once you add a card. |
| J7 SHS | Plug-in hybrid, 18.4kWh, up to 100km electric | Listed on the Summit spec sheet | As above. Check the Track grade's sheet before assuming. |
| J8 Track and Ridge | 2.0L turbo petrol, 2WD or AWD | Listed, TF card not included | Front camera, playback on the 12.3-inch screen once you add a card. |
What the spec sheet does not say is what the camera misses. The Chery platform manual for the J7 describes the recorder as "if equipped", recording "image, sound and other relevant information during driving" to a Class 10 card you supply, viewed on the head unit over a Wi-Fi link. There is no rear camera, nothing about recording while parked, and no GPS or speed data on the footage. If your car's menus show no recorder at all, treat it as absent. Either way, the three things a dash cam is really for are not covered:
- The car behind you. Being rear-ended is one of the most common crashes on Australian roads, and a front camera never sees the driver who caused it.
- The car park. A door ding, a trolley or a hit-and-run while you are in the shops happens with the car off. Nothing in Jaecoo's documentation says the factory camera records then.
- The evidence itself. Insurers and police take a clip with a GPS track, speed and timestamp at face value. A phone video of your car's screen is a harder sell, and the VIOFO app sends the clip straight to your phone in the car park.
Powering a dash cam in a Jaecoo: EV, hybrid and petrol are different
J5 EV: like every electric car it has a small 12V battery that is topped up from the traction pack while the car is on, not while it sleeps. The spec sheet lists 12V outlets front and boot, which are fine for driving-only recording. For parking mode, use the BP100 ($454.98): a 7,650mAh LiFePO4 pack that charges as you drive and runs the camera for hours after you lock the car, with the J5's 12V never asked to carry the load. Our EV parking mode guide explains why we do not hardwire parking mode in EVs.
J7 SHS and J8 SHS (plug-in hybrids): the engine does not start itself to charge the 12V while the car is parked, so treat them exactly like the J5 EV: BP100 for parking mode, hardwire or 12V socket for driving.
J7 Ridge and J8 petrol: a conventional 12V battery, so the HK4 hardwire kit ($26.99) for the A229 series, or the HK6 ($36.99) for the A329S, gives you parking mode with a low-voltage cut-off that shuts the camera down before the battery is too flat to start. On the J7 the interior fuse box is in the lower dash on the driver's side. Prefer not to touch fuses? The OP100 OBD-II cable ($85.99) plugs into the diagnostic port instead.
Do not rely on a USB port for parking mode in any of them. The spec sheets list front and rear USB-A and USB-C ports for charging, not for keeping an accessory alive with the car locked. Our power options guide compares socket, hardwire, OBD and battery pack.
The VIOFO builds we recommend for a Jaecoo
VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH + BP100 battery pack
4K front and 2K rear on Sony STARVIS 2 sensors, a front CPL filter in the box for the J5's raked windscreen, and the BP100 running parking mode without the car's 12V. Skip the pack if the car sleeps in a locked garage and you only want driving footage.
$459 + $454.98
Shop A229 Pro Add BP100
VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH + HK4 hardwire kit
The same camera, powered from the fuse box with a low-voltage cut-off, so parking mode runs overnight on the petrol car's own battery and shuts off before it drops too far. The factory front camera keeps working alongside it.
$459 + $26.99
Shop A229 Pro Add HK4
VIOFO A329S 2CH
4K at 60fps up front, 2K rear, Wi-Fi 6 so a clip is on your phone in seconds. Pair it with the HK6 kit in a petrol car or the BP100 in the J5 EV and J7 SHS. Skip it if 4K at 30fps and the A229 Pro's lower price suit you; the footage difference matters most for fast-moving plates.
$599.99
Shop A329S 2CH
VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH
2K front and 2K rear on the same Sony STARVIS 2 sensors, at the lowest price for a two-channel VIOFO. Plenty for a city-driven J5. Skip it if you want 4K to read plates on cars passing you on the freeway.
$329
Shop A229 PlusA229 Plus vs A229 Pro vs A329S for a Jaecoo
| Model | Front / rear | Parking power | Best Jaecoo fit | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A229 Plus 2CH | 2K / 2K | HK4 kit or BP100 | J5 EV on a budget, city driving | $329 |
| A229 Pro 2CH | 4K 30fps / 2K | HK4 kit or BP100 | Every Jaecoo; our default | $459 |
| A329S 2CH | 4K 60fps / 2K | HK6 kit or BP100 | J7 SHS and J8 owners who want the best, rideshare with the RCC360 | $599.99 |
All three: Sony STARVIS 2 sensors, built-in GPS, Wi-Fi to the VIOFO app, parking mode with the matching kit or pack, microSD card sold separately (we suggest the 128GB industrial card, $115, or 256GB if you run parking mode), 24-month Australian warranty. Prices shown are live.
Fitting it: where the camera goes on a Jaecoo
All four models have a large camera and sensor housing behind the mirror for the driver-assistance cameras (and the factory dashcam where fitted). Leave it alone. The VIOFO mounts on the glass to the passenger side of the housing, where the mirror hides it from the driver's seat, with the cable tucked into the headlining and down the passenger A-pillar behind the curtain airbag's path. The rear camera sits at the top of the tailgate glass inside the wiper's sweep. A plug-in or OBD install takes about 20 minutes with no tools; a hardwire to the J7's fuse box is a comfortable DIY job with our installation guide, or a local auto electrician can hide every cable. If you would rather buy a camera that comes with a booked, professional fit, the FineVu GX35 2CH ($449) can be installed Australia-wide in metro areas for $250 through FineVu Australia's installer network.
Warranty: Jaecoo's eight-year warranty covers manufacturing defects; fitting an accessory does not void it under Australian Consumer Law, only damage the accessory or a bad installation causes is excluded. Our new car warranty guide covers the detail and what to keep on file.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Jaecoo J7 have a built-in dash cam?
Jaecoo Australia lists a built-in dashcam on the J7 Ridge and on the J7 SHS Summit spec sheet, with the memory card not included. It is a front camera that records while you drive and plays back on the centre screen once you add a card. It does not record the rear and nothing in Jaecoo's documentation says it records while parked.
Does the Jaecoo J5 EV have a dash cam?
No. The J5 EV spec sheet lists no dashcam, and the camera behind its mirror is for the driver-assistance systems. A two-channel VIOFO with the BP100 battery pack is the set-up we recommend.
Does the Jaecoo J8 have a dash cam?
Yes, Jaecoo lists an in-built dashcam on the J8 Track and Ridge, TF card not included. Same limits as the J7: front only, no documented parking recording.
Will a dash cam drain the J5 EV's battery?
Not while driving. Parking mode is the question: an EV's 12V battery is small and is not topped up while the car sleeps, so run parking mode from a BP100 battery pack rather than hardwiring it. The pack charges as you drive and the car's battery is never used for parking recording.
Can I add a rear camera to the factory Jaecoo dashcam?
No. The factory unit is a single front camera with no rear input. A two-channel VIOFO gives you front and rear as one system, with both clips time-matched in the app.
Does fitting a dash cam void the Jaecoo 8-year warranty?
No. Under Australian Consumer Law an accessory does not void a new car warranty. Only damage caused by the accessory or its installation is excluded, so use a fused hardwire kit or a battery pack, keep cables clear of the airbags and the ADAS housing, and keep the installer's invoice.
Which VIOFO is best for the Jaecoo J7 SHS?
The A229 Pro 2CH for most owners, or the A329S 2CH if you want 4K at 60fps. Either way, power parking mode from the BP100 battery pack: a plug-in hybrid parked with the engine off behaves like an EV.
